Saint Charles / Porte d'Aix
Two gateways into Marseilles are to benefit from a renovation programme. Gare Saint-Charles, welcoming rail transport passengers, and la Porte d'Aix, welcoming A7 motorway users. The entire sector covers 16 hectares.
Gare Saint-Charles
The gare Saint-Charles area has begun its metamorphosis with the arrival of the TGV Méditerranée. It continues with the rehabilitation of the areas around the station, which is becoming a multimodal hub between rail travel, bus travel, town bus services, the underground and car travel. The creation of a parvis on place Victor Hugo leading to the Université de Provence and improvement of the square Narvik.
Porte d’Aix
For the Porte d'Aix, the most significant change is for the A7 motorway which has been moved back. By freeing this area of all road traffic, the district is reborn with the creation of a 3.5-hectare public space around the renovated Porte d'Aix.
The St Charles mixed development zone is currently entering its last phase, marked by a change of direction: in the wake of the implantation of the IMVT (Institut Méditerranéen de la ville et des territoires) on the “Aix bas” island, the emphasis is now on building a student district, by adapting the schedule for the last islands to be developed (Aix haut, Pelletan, Turenne) and working on facilities more so for a young, student population.
